Mock Draft 3.0: Buffalo Sabres snag two defensemen
By Sion Fawkes
Tristan Luneau
Standing at 6’2, 190 lb, Tristan Luneau is yet another prospect who displays decent size that makes a great boom-or-bust selection at the 28th pick. Something I can see the Buffalo Sabres going for whether they ultimately select a forward or a defenseman.
But in this scenario, they go defense with the two-way Luneau, who scored 43 times (12 goals) in 63 contests with the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL this past season. The downside to Luneau is that he has had injury issues, which included surgical repairs to lower-body injuries.
If Launeau remains injury-free, the high-IQ defenseman could end up being the steal of the first round. He has a tendency not only to break up plays, but to create turnovers and make the quick pass up-ice to teammates, further creating sound opportunities in the offensive zone.
Teams will catch him out of position at times, indicating he still needs to work on honing his game. He also needs to do a better job with winning 50-50 battles for the puck.
