The Matthew Tkachuk Trade

In this particular trade, the Florida Panthers were basically the Vegas Golden Knights, trading for the star player while the Calgary Flames were more in the Buffalo Sabres situation and traded for the ransom. In short, here is what the trade looked like:

Of course, we all know what Tkachuk did last season, and his credentials are higher than Eichel’s. In 2021-22, Takachuk earned Second Team All-Star honors, and he was in contention last season for the Hart and Selke Trophies. Eichel did earn All-Rookie honors, and he finished eighth in voting for the Hart Trophy in 2019-20.

The Flames got two proven players who are middle-aged in NHL years. We all know what Huberdeau is capable of, having having scored 115 points, 30 goals, and 85 assists last season.

Weegar contended for the Norris Trophy last season, finishing 14th in the voting. His plus-40 stood out against all his other statistics, but let’s not forget about his career-best 44 points, eight goals, and 36 assists. He also logged career highs in blocks with 156, plus 178 hits, and 74 takeaways.

The Flames also acquired Cole Schwindt, who has appeared in just three NHL games. However, the 21-year-old forward showed promise, winning 15 of his 31 face-offs and logging five hits. Calgary also acquired a lottery-protected first round pick in 2025.

Once again, you can see the similarities between the Tkachuk and Eichel trades. So which one holds more value in the short term?
