"New year's" resolutions

It’s coming. You can feel it in the 58 degree nights. You can see it when the sun sets earlier and earlier. My favorite time of year, Fall. Don’t get me wrong. Summer has it’s uses. But hot, muggy weather and boring sports ain’t on the list. Give me a 60 degree day, the living room windows just cracked, football on Sunday afternoons, my wife’s roast baking in the oven and, of course…hockey.

I would hope that the players are ramping up for this year, too. This has all the makings of one helluva season. There certainly, in recent memory, hasn’t been a more hyped season for the Buffalo Sabres. Players are starting to make their way back to Buffalo and, in some cases, perhaps never left. There must be some thoughts in each of their minds on how to improve over last year; what they want for this season; how they want the 2011-12 year to start, and finish…

THE 2011-12 BUFFALO SABRES “NEW YEAR’S” RESOLUTIONS

Jhonas Enroth…To give my coach the confidence to use his backup goalie for a change, even if I do like to give him heart attacks and make the odd “maskless” save.

Jordan Leopold…To use the revamped defense to my advantage, fly under the radar, and post career highs in goals and points…again.

Mike Weber…To continue on my path to becoming the next Rhett Warrener, and to actually crack a smile on the ice for once…but not ’till June.

Cody McCormick…To continue to make people forget about Adam Mair.

Derek Roy…Like me or not, to remain being the best “bang for your buck” on this hockey team.

Christian Ehrhoff…To keep shooting and scoring, and make this Sabres’ power-play tops in the league. That’s why I’m here, isn’t it?

Ales Kotalik…As I promised, to work my ass off in camp, at the very least making some of my teammates look over their shoulders wondering if I still have some gas in the car.

Marc-Andre Gragnani…To show management and coaches alike that SHAONE rhymes with GONE, not BALONEY.

Drew Stafford…To show everyone that I wasn’t a one-hit wonder.

Brad Boyes…To be one of the best 3rd-line wingers in the league and quietly pot 20-25 goals…and to actually remain on the wing all year. Right, Lindy?

Ville Leino…To succeed at being placed back at center, my natural position…and help Boyes remain on the damn wing, so people stop making excuses for him :) (Just kidding).

Robyn Regehr…To solidify last season’s shaky defense, and destroy any poor soul who dares venture down the tunnel of death.

Thomas Vanek…To show the NHL world that I am ready to lead this team…as captain.

Shaone Morrisonn…To reiterate to Darcy my desire for a trade, because I really have no illusions of cracking this lineup.

Paul Gaustad…To keep ‘em all wondering how a guy, with such ridiculous hand/eye coordination on faceoffs, couldn’t score into the ocean from the beach.

Jason Pominville…To finally realize that the object of shooting the puck isn’t to hit the opposing goaltender IN THE CREST!

Ryan Miller…To get back to Vezina winning form and form a strong bond with my little Swedish Ewok.

Patrick Kaleta…Health…for a full season, Dammit!

Zack Kassian…To ride the buses, keep my mouth shut, work hard, and give the Sabres their fourth consecutive AHL Rookie-of-the-year.

Matt Ellis…To be the first player to be called up from Rochester, and to teach young Zack to keep his mouth shut, work ha…

Nathan Gerbe…To continue to play like I’m 6’3″, and show Ales Kotalik the meaning of the words “heart” and “guts”.

Andrej Sekera…To, once again, try my best to avoid becoming the next Dmitri Kalinin.

Jochen Hecht…To get back to being the “Heshtie” I know I can be, and be much more to this team than an early October tour guide.

Tyler Myers…To continue my rise towards Norris trophy consideration, and to eventually make Robyn Regehr worship the ground I walk on.

Tyler Ennis…To avoid the dreaded “sophomore slump”, put up 60 points, and be kind to Darcy, Ted and Terry when it becomes “contract time”. (That last part refers to you, too, Myers!).

Luke Adam…To hone that Andreychuk-esque hand/eye coordination…but improve on that Andreychuk-esque skating stride.

AND

Lindy Ruff…To hoist Lord Stanley’s cup in mid-June (no doubt on a hand-off from a smiling Mike Weber), and bring grown men in hockey-crazed WNY to tears…finally.

GO GET ‘EM, BOYS!!!
