There are 5 players with ties to the Buffalo Sabres who are on their way to the World Junior Championships which kick off the day after Christmas. Mikhail Grigorenko, Nikita Zadorov, Gustav Possler, Rasmus Ristolainen and J.T. Compher are all Sabres prospects who are on their way to the World Juniors.

For the most part we know what to expect from Buffalo Sabres prospects who will be in the tournament, so we’re going to look at 5 players who aren’t in the Sabres organization who the Sabres should look at during the World Juniors.

Im a fan of Ekblad. Unquestioned, I would take him first overall knowing what Buffalo already has in its stable and needing a #1 centerman.

The kid plays as his size dictates and looks more ‘ old school ‘ then Zadorov.

Whether the Sabres get the 1st or 2nd pick I’d take Ekblad in a flash, I think he’s got more upside than Rheinhart TBH

      • Jes

We could get both seeing how Sabres and Isles are 29th and 30th in the league. I definitely wouldn’t trade the Isles pick unless something high and very young can help us out from another team.

        Ekblad – Sounds awesome.

        Reinhart – Sounds awesome.

Da Colle – Like you said he’s going to be a beast of a man. Imagine having him along with Girgensons on the same team.

        Thatcher – Naw

The other 2 are good option seeing we have no one on the left wing.

If the Sabres do end up with 2 picks inside the top 5 I’d love to see them take Ekblad and Da Colle. Like you said Da Colle and Girgensons together would be insane! and Ekblad I think is too good to pass up

Would not take another defenseman doesn’t make sense we need to work on the offensive side of the ice again maybe trade of a team who wants that guy but buffalo should go purely offensive the first 3 rebounds or trade for lots of first round pick for 2015 to get mcdavid

    • Caitlin Campbell

Ekblad is such a strong defenceman though and since the offence in this draft is week it may be better to go after a strong D-men then a medicore forward

        I totally agree.

The last draft was loaded with high upside forwards that now seem to be on every Sabre’s dream list. Valeri Nichushkin is playing on Dallas Stars first line and is a candidate for the Rookie of the Year. Anthony Mantha was still on the board when the Sabre’s had their second pick of the first round and he has 35 goals and 38 assists in 32 games playing in the QHL. If the Sabre’s had made either of those picks, selecting Ekblad would be a no-brainer. Regardless of the present prospects, pick the best player available…..and grow some testicles.

The Sabres did fairly well at last season’s draft with Zadorov and Ristolainen, both whom will turn out to be solid guys on the blue line. If Ekblad is available I think they have to take him

      • Dan

Granted, Zadorov and Ristolainen are both solid but you do not become #1 in any business by playing safe. As John Tortorella said “Safe is Death”. Nichushkin and Mantha will become far beyond solid and are the type of players that take you past a team always striving to be a 8th seed and sneak into the playoffs. I would have had Mantha at the top of the list of players to watch at the World Juniors. He is the favorite to be the CHL player of the year.
