facebooktwitterreddit

After selecting Sam Reinhart with the second-overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft last night, the Buffalo Sabres have picked up Brendan Lemieux of the OHL’s Barrie Colts this morning with the 31st overall pick, the first pick in the second round.

Brendan, the son of former NHLer Claude Lemieux, spent the last two seasons with the OHL’s Barrie Colts.

This season, he had 53 points in 65 games, including 27 goals and 25 assists. Lemieux is a right-shooting forward who racked up 145 penalty minutes last season with Barrie. His rookie OHL season saw him put up a 14-point, 52 penalty minute campaign in the 2012-13 season.

Prior to that, Lemieux, a Phoenix native, spent 11 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL.

He was ranked 28th by NHL Central Scouting and can be found on Twitter @blemieux22.

The 31st pick is the first of three that the Sabres hold in the second round of the 2014 NHL Draft. They’ll be on the clock again shortly, as Buffalo also holds the 39th overall selection.

UPDATE: Sabres trade pick #39 to the Washington Capitals in exchange for picks #44 and #74.

So next up, the Sabres pick at #44 and five spots later, Buffalo picks again, with the 49th overall selection, their third of the second round.

This is the highest the Sabres have picked in the second round in recent years, but it’s also the second consecutive year that the Sabres have three second-round picks in the NHL Draft.

In 2013, the Sabres picked up left winger J.T. Compher with the 35th overall pick. They also chose center Connor Hurley at 38th and right winger Justin Bailey at 52nd.

After the three second-round picks, the Sabres also hold the first selection in round three of the 2014 NHL Draft, 61st overall. Following that, the Sabres won’t select again until the fifth round, with no picks in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft.
