Buffalo Sabres Players: Zemgus Girgensons Needs To Be Let Loose

facebooktwitterreddit

The Buffalo Sabres have been playing very well the last few games for sure, but recently they suffered an offensive blow by Evander Kane going down with an ankle injury. With that injury, the Sabres brought up Tim Schaller to fill in the offensive hole. With Kane out of the lineup, there is a need for another top six player to step up and take charge. Normally, this is where I would be preaching that Matt Moulson needs to be the guy to do this, but instead I want to see Zemgus Girgensons do it with some distinctive force.

Last season, Zemgus Girgensons was the top power forward on the team. He played first line minutes and was producing points at a pretty good rate. Is he a top line center player? No, but a position that he would excel on is the second line with Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart. Evander Kane has gone down with an injury, and now that role needs to be filled properly by a player of a similar style.

Both Reinhart and Eichel are hard working players, so adding Girgensons to the mix would only be beneficial to the line as a whole. Girgensons has had a bit of a slow start to the year offensively, but he has been throwing hits, and making defensive plays left and right. Last night against the Flyers, he put up his first goal of the season on a breakaway in overtime. Girgensons is a workhorse and a freight train that doesn’t understand the concept of (or possibly even the word) brakes.

The Sabres need to continue this positive momentum that they have going for them. They are now 3-6-0, and that is not a bad place to build from With the top line already finding chemistry, the Buffalo Sabres need to focus on getting their young stars going. If Jack Eichel continues to produce more, Sam Reinhart contributes more, and Zemgus Girgensons adds in his two-way skills to the fray, the Sabres second line would be very well off.

Girgensons is the kind of player that needs to be allowed off of his leash every night. He is a dangerous player in both ends and can cause some serious damage to opponents. He can throw big hits, score highlight reel goals, and still not take a dumb penalty. Girgensons is the kind of young leader that needs to be unleashed as soon as possible.

He has been moved around the lineup all season so far, but I think he needs to be slotted in the top six in order for him to be most effective. The Buffalo Sabres are misusing the talents that he has on their third line. He is much more capable than that and should be allowed to play in the top six.

This is my formal call for the Buffalo Sabres to unleash the Latvian Locomotive!
