SabreLand still quiet

Checking around for rumors about the Sabres, it appears the activity at the foot of Washington is either not very active, or they are keeping an extremely tight lid on things.  Checking with TSN.ca, their list of players to watch does not even include Tim Connolly.  Here is who TSN.ca has labelled as names to watch as the time towards the trade deadline ticks away:

The Names

Jay Bouwmeester

Team: Florida Panthers
Position: Defence

Age: 25

Contract Status: UFA on July 1

The Latest: The Panthers have talked to a number of teams and has a variety of trade scenarios to consider, but it’s possible Bouwmeester has a change of heart and stays.” – TSN

Marian Gaborik

Team: Minnesota Wild

Position: Left Wing
Age: 26

Contract Status: UFA on July 1

The Latest: Gaborik has resumed skating on his own, a step forward in his recovery from left hip surgery. The two-time All-Star right wing will go through a major physical test on March 1 to assess his progress, with the possibility of returning to the team later in the month. Gaborik has appeared in only six games this season. – USA Today

Tomas Kaberle

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Position: Defence

Age: 30

Contract Status: Signed for two more years at $4.25M per season
The Latest: When it comes to Kaberle, who would waive his no-trade contract to go to certain teams, GM Brian Burke believes dealing him will be difficult. “It has to be a deal that blows my doors off and that hasn’t happened,” he said. – The London Free Press

Chris Pronger

Team: Anaheim Ducks

Position: Defence
Age: 34

Contract Status: Signed for one more year at $6.25 million

The Latest: The Ducks won’t play at home again until March 6, two days after the NHL trade deadline. It’s entirely possible that Chris Pronger will not be with them when they return. If GM Bob Murray can get a useful young player who can play now and a first-round pick for Pronger he should jump at that kind of deal and accelerate a much-needed renovation of what has become an old and slow-footed team. – LA Times

Nik Antropov

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Position: Right Wing

Age: 28

Contract Status: UFA on July 1
The Latest: Antropov may headline the parade of players out of Toronto. Brian Burke has established the asking price for Antropov – a first round draft pick. – TSN

Ryan Smyth

Team: Colorado Avalanche

Position: Left Wing
Age: 32

Contract Status: Signed for three more years with a $6.25M cap hit

The Latest: While Smyth has been mentioned in various rumours, he still has a no-trade clause and has already said he does not want to waive it. – Denver Post/Ottawa Sun

Keith Tkachuk

Team: St. Louis Blues

Position: Left Wing

Age: 36

Contract Status: UFA on July 1
The Latest: Tkachuk, 36, will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and while he holds a no-trade clause, the team’s fate over the next two weeks will decide which direction that heads. – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Chris Neil

Team: Ottawa Senators

Position: Right Wing
Age: 29

Contract Status: UFA on July 1

The Latest: Senators GM Bryan Murray confirmed that he’s held talks with Neil’s agent, Todd Reynolds, about a contract extension, but the sides aren’t close to a new deal. – Ottawa Sun

Colby Armstrong

Team: Atlanta Thrashers

Position: Right Wing

Age: 26

Contract Status: RFA on July 1
The Latest: According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Armstrong has attracted interest this season, including the Penguins who would like to see him reunited with captain Sidney Crosby.

Scottie Upshall

Team: Philadelphia Flyers

Position: Right Wing
Age: 25

Contract Status: RFA on July 1

The Latest: Upshall, who still has plenty of upside, may be tough to part with. However, he’s a restricted free agent this summer and is expecting a raise on his $1.25 million salary.

Michael Nylander

Team: Washington Capitals

Position: Centre

Age: 36

Contract Status: Signed for two more years with a $4.875M cap hit
The Latest: Nylander has two years remaining on his contract and he eats up about $4.8 million in cap space, so he’s a tough sell. But for a team eager to add some offence late in the season, Nylander may be the answer.

Niclas Havelid

Team: Atlanta Thrashers

Position: Defence
Age: 35

Contract Status: UFA on July 1

The Latest: Havelid has been a great defensive defenceman for a team that has struggled in its own end. With his contract expiring in the summer, he’s an attractive option for a playoff team.
