Rochester Americans Top Crunch – Moving On To Toronto

Timothy T. Ludwig-US PRESSWIRE

It wasn’t easy by any stretch of the means, but a win is a win – and the Rochester Americans started the season with two points by taking a shootout win against the cross state rivals the Syracuse Crunch.

Buffalo Sabres prospects Corey Tropp and Mark Mancari led the way with two goals each (Mancari’s second was the shootout goal that gave the victory).  Buffalo Sabres forward Cody Hodgson showed his ability at the pivot position by setting up Tropp’s first goal just 24 seconds into the game.

The Rochester Americans and Syracuse Crunch decided defense was optional for the night, trading goals throughout the night.  The Amerks held the lead for most of the night, until a pair of goals by Tyler Johnson inside of two minutes gave the Crunch a lead albeit only momentarily.

Mark Mancari found the top of the net, and scored the only shootout goal in the skills competition in the fifth round – sealing the victory for the Rochester Americans.

No rest for the Buffalo Sabres farm club, as they travel North to Toronto to take on the Marlies.  Tonight’s 5PM contest against last years Western Division Champions will be a test for the red, white and blue – they play the Marlies ten times this year, and if they hope to be playoff bound have to do better than the 3-7-3-0 record against them last year, including a three game sweep in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs. The Amerks were outscored 11-6 in those three games.

Tonight is the season opener for the Toronto Marlies as well as the home opener for the blue and white.  The Marlies are looking to improve upon last year – where they made it to the Calder Cup but were swept by the eventual champions the Norfolk Admirals.  Game time is 5PM and once again can be heard on Sports 1280 AM.

Here is the box score from last nights contest.
