David Poile – Nashville Predators (1997)

Last but not least on our roster of tenured general managers is Nashville Predators general manager David Poile.  Poile is the only general manager in the history of the franchise, but it was not his first time running an NHL franchise.

Before coming on with the Predators, Poile spent 15 years running the Washington Capitals, a team that amassed a record of 594-454-124  under his watch.

In 2001 David Poile was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy – following in his father’s footsteps.  David Poile has connections to Western New York as he played for the Rochester Americans from 1968-1971.

The Predators did not make the playoffs this past season, marking just the second time since the lockout the team failed to make the post season.  The Predators have made the post season seven times since joining the National Hockey League, but have never made it past the second round, nor have every won their division.

Poile is credited with keeping his hockey club competitive on a relatively small budget, making many shrewd moves to keep his team in the fight.

Time might be running out for Poile though, if the Predators can’t turn their limited amount of success into major success and put more post season wins together.

Where does Darcy Regier fit into all of this?  He may have more of a shelf-life than fans want.  Who in the class of 1997 will be the first to fall?  Who will be able to turn it around and put the years of fan frustration to rest with a Stanley Cup banner to hang in their rafters?

For Darcy, it will be the ultimate “I told you so” moment.  For the fans – that day may never come.  Here is one fan that hopes it does, whether Darcy is here or not.
