Ken Holland – Detroit Red Wings (1997)

If Success is measured by Lou Lamoriello in the general manager field, when Lou retired, Ken Holland will be the model citizen that general managers try and emulate. While long gone are the dynasty era teams that win Cup after Cup after Cup; the Detroit Red Wings are the team that screams modern dynasty more than any other in the league.

Holland has less on ice experience than Darcy Regier (who played in 26 career NHL games), Ken Holland was drafted in the 12th round of the 1975 draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He appeared in four contests in the league, one for the Hartford Whalers and three for the Red Wings.

He started his career with the Detroit Redwings in administration, a scout in Western Canada. He took over the role as general manager in 1997.

The Detroit Red Wings have never missed the playoffs under Holland, and have won ten division championships, four conference championships, and three Stanley Cups – his first Stanley Cup Championship was the second in a row for Detroit, and was the last time any team in the league won back to back championships.

Since Holland took over, the Detroit Red Wings have won more games (regular season and post season) than any other team in the league (635 regular season wins and 107 post season wins).

In 2009 – Holland was ranked second in Sports Illustrated top sports GM/Executive of the decade, second to Scott Pioli of the New England Patriots and the only hockey executive to make the list.

Ken Holland is destined to make it into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builders category. Putting him and Lou in the untouchable category on this list.
