No Buffalo Sabres action last night – but there was still plenty of hockey to be watched.  How is the new alignment comparing to last season, or the last full season?  Is having the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets in the East a game change for some teams?  Here are last nights quick recaps from around the NHL.

Phoenix Coyotes (3-2-0) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (1-4-0)

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia has been able to get their first win of the season, but new head coach Craig Berube still isn’t winning as many games as Flyers Nation would like.  And I am happy with that everyday of the week. Is this the year of the penalty shot? Phoenix holds on for a 2-1 win.

Los Angeles Kings (3-2-0) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (2-1-2)

James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles need the shootout after goals from Dwight King and Jeff Skinner kept regulation tied up through three periods, but were able to pickup two out of three points against Carolina.

Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1-0) vs. Florida Panthers (2-3-0)

The Panthers weren’t going to let star-gazing get in the way of ruining their home opener, and did a good job of taking advantage of the Penguins. Florida doubles up Pittsbugh to win their home opener 6-3.

New York Islanders (2-1-1) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (2-1-1)

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Okposo thought he was giving the New York Islanders a chance at beating Chicago by tying the game up, but Michael Handzus puts the game winner in during the second period and the Blackhawks and Islanders skate to a scoreless third period to give Chicago the win.

Dallas Stars (2-1-0) vs. Winnipeg Jets (2-3-0)

Fred Greenslade-USA TODAY Sports

Tyler Seguin picks up two goals and Blake Wheeler break the shutout attempt as the Dallas Stars and Lindy Ruff skate to a 4-1 victory over the Jets.

New Jersey Devils (0-2-3) vs Calgary Flames (3-0-2)

Candice Ward-USA TODAY Sports

New Jersey trying to get their fist win of the season, and the Calgary Flames looking to stay out of the regulation loss column. Calgary starts the 2013-2014 NHL season with points in their first five games defeating the Devils 3-2, keeping the New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres as the only remaining teams in the league without a win.
