Buffalo Sabres Playoff Memories: The Double Hat Trick

The Buffalo Sabres have had some great playoff memories in the history of the franchise.  None are better when the team is playing against a rivalry – and gets the jump on the other team.  That has happened a few times in history, but none more exciting when the Buffalo Sabres beat the Philadelphia Flyers 8-2 in the 2006 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

You might remember the press conference after the game.  Lindy Ruff calls the Flyers idiots, while Ken Hitchcock has some choice words for the media and for Lindy Ruff.

While the post game press conference carried over the emotions that poured out on the ice, the real story was the fact that two Buffalo Sabres scored hat tricks on this night, J.P. Dumont and former captain Jason Pominville.

Dumont gets the Buffalo Sabres on the board first, scoring a nice goal to put the Sabres up one nothing. Chris Drury puts the Buffalo Sabres up 2-0. It was all down hill for the Philadelphia Flyers from that moment on.

Alex Kotalik put the Buffalo Sabres up three nothing and it appeared that the Buffalo Sabres were all going to get the chance to put a goal in on the Flyers taht night.

Jason Pominville made it four-nothing. Robert Esche at this point lost his mind, and when Derek Roy wanted to play tough guy, he came out of the crease to join a melee – you knew at this point the Buffalo Sabres owned the Philadelphia Flyers.

J.P. Dumont gets his second goal of the night, making it 5-0 Buffalo, and there was no stopping the goal scoring train at that point.

The Flyers would cut into the Buffalo Sabres lead at that point, but it wasn’t enough to deflate the noise that was reaching a major crescendo in Buffalo – that got even louder when J.P. Dumont put in his third of the night, getting the first hat trick for the Buffalo Sabres.

Jason Pominville would net his second of the night, and then get a classic Rick Jeanneret call when he put in his third goal of the night.

Here come the hats, but I don’t know how many are left. – Rick Jeanneret

Where were you when the Buffalo Sabres absolutely embarrassed the Philadelphia Flyers in the post season back in 2006?  The fan of the night award goes to the little boy that takes off his hockey helmet and bangs it on the glass to celebrate goal number eight.

That game would give the Buffalo Sabres a 2-0 series lead – and for fans in attendance, a memory to last a lifetime.  That little boy on the glass will surely remember it, and hopefully he is still in the area getting ready to celebrate even more playoff memories.

If you didn’t see the game or don’t remember it, here are all eight goals by the Buffalo Sabres, and some idiotic moments from the Philadelphia Flyers.

Despite being out of the series after this game, Philadelphia did not give up, even though it looked like it in this game. Buffalo would need six games to dispatch of the Flyers – only to end up losing to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Conference Finals.
