Buffalo Sabres Futures: Who Coaches The Rochester Americans

facebooktwitterreddit

The Buffalo Sabres are in search of a head coach.  Oh wait, that isn’t news?  Did you also know they were looking for a coach for their top affiliate in the American Hockey League as well?

The Buffalo Sabres relieved head coach Chadd Cassidy back on May 1st – and there haven’t been many rumblings about who will be taking over for Cassidy in developing talent and fostering a winning atmosphere for the Americans.

Cassidy was the only remaining coach from the Darcy Regier era remaining on the staff.  He came in a package deal that brought Ron Rolston over from Hockey USA to the Rochester Americans.  When Rolston got called up to the big club, Cassidy took over as bench boss.

You can get all the facts and quotes on the firing from the Rochester D&C article here.

I am actually surprised it took this long for the Buffalo Sabres to remove him as head coach of the Amerks – not because he wasn’t doing a good job.  Can you really blame a guy for doing so bad when the parent club was doing worse, and constantly taking players because of trades and injuries?

Regardless of his time here and the job he did – he is no longer, and the Buffalo Sabres need to think about who they will put behind the bench.

Buffalo Sabres Coach Search – Rochester Americans Version

Does it matter who the coach of the Buffalo Sabres is?  Knowing the Buffalo Sabres are going to go after a big name coach for the Buffalo Sabres – they might want to hold off on hiring a coach for the Rochester Americans – allowing the new head coach of the Buffalo Sabres to have solid input on that position.

If the Sabres are series about building a winning culture from top to bottom – wouldn’t you want a coach in the American Hockey League that was eyeballs with the system being played in Buffalo? With as close as the franchises are geographically – the Buffalo Sabres could be viewing the head coaching position in Rochester as another assistant to the head coach in Buffalo.

Personally, had the relationship not soured between Tim Murray and former head coach Ted Nolan – I think that would have been the perfect fit for Ted Nolan; he remains with the Buffalo Sabres organization, and both sides get to save face and move forward without things getting messy.

Ted Nolan will now have a lot more to overcome to get back in the National Hockey League in my opinion, almost being screwed over by the way the Buffalo Sabres used him the past two years.

What coaching options are there for the Rochester Americans – we may only start to know the start of that question once the Buffalo Sabres have decided on their own head coach.
