The Buffalo Sabres announced they have recalled Jake McCabe from the Rochester Americans….on his birthday.

This is his first recall of the season. For the Sabres, McCabe has played nine games amassing an assist during his previous stay.

The 2012 2nd-round draft pick for the Sabres produced, as a rookie, 5 goals and 24 assists for 29 points in 57 games for the Amerks.

McCabe had an impressive development camp and a solid preseason, but was sent down with Linus Ullmark a couple days ago.

The Wisconsin native was the captain of the U-20 United States team for the U-20 WJC, leading them to a gold medal.

McCabe is a rock solid, puck moving defenseman that can compliment the game of Mark Pysyk well, espeically because they’ve played together last year in Rochester. Coach Bylsma has options when it comes to defense, even if they aren’t exactly ideal.

When you’re watching the game today, look for McCabe to keep his game incredibly simple, but if he has the chance, he can make some impressive passes. McCabe and Rasmus Ristolainen are my favorites to be able to make those Victor Hedman passes from behind their own net.

  • This will certainly build the confidence of the young defenseman, especially if he plays well enough to stick around with the Sabres.

If McCabe is sent down after a few games, there shouldn’t be discouragement from him or the fans. He is a young man who can benefit from playing more minutes and having a crucial role in Rochester. Moreover, the Sabres are having some serious problems with their defensive depth. If McCabe stays with Buffalo for a while, the only productive defenseman in Rochester will be Chad Ruhwedel and maybe Jerome Leduc.

Overall, look for Jake McCabe to come out like his hair is on fire. He wants to stay with Buffalo and it’s his birthday. Hopefully he can keep his excitment in check and play a smart, solid game this afternoon.
