After kicking off their season with a pair of wins, the Rochester Americans dropped a pair of games this weekend to the St. John’s IceCaps, AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. The IceCaps are the Habs’ new affiliate after the Hamilton Bulldogs AHL team moved out and the former Belleville Bulls moved into Hamilton.

The Rochester Americans made their first trip to Newfoundland in over a decade, but fell by scores of 5-2 and 6-2, respectively.

On Friday, the IceCaps were led by two-goal performances from both Sven Andrighetto and Christian Thomas.

Bud Holloway also scored for the IceCaps.

Rochester goals came from Dan Catenacci and Jack Nevins, both of whom notched their second goals of the campaign. Jason Akeson had a pair of assists, with Philip Varone and Chad Ruhwedel also adding helpers.

Linus Ullmark had 29 saves in the loss. The IceCaps’ final goal was an empty-netter. Zach Fucale had 31 saves.

Akeson led the Amerks with six shots on goal; Catenacci registered five tallies.

The teams followed up Friday night’s game with a subsequent meeting in St. John’s on Saturday.

Varone and Jerry D’Amigo scored for the Rochester Americans, who fell by a score of 6-2.

Michael McCarron had his first professional goal en route to a hat trick to help the IceCaps to victory. Christian Thomas, Morgan Ellis and Joel Hanley also scored for the IceCaps.

This time, it was Andrey Makarov in net for the Rochester Americans, allowing six goals on 36 shots faced. On the other side was Dustin Tokarski making 29 saves for St. John’s.

Chad Ruhwedel led the Amerks with four shots on goal, but numerous players notched three shots each – Varone, Jerome Leduc, Colby Robak and Brady Austin.

Saturday’s game saw the two teams rack up 48 combined penalty minutes, with 17 of those going to St. John’s Morgan Ellis.

The Rochester Ameircans were outshot 36-31 on Saturday after being narrowly outshot 34-33 on Friday.

Throughout the course of the weekend, the Rochester Americans went 0-for-10 on the power play. That’s definitely a point the team will want to improve on; overall, the team is just 1-for-18 on the power play in four games this season.

The IceCaps were a combined 2-for-9 on the power play, including 2-for-5 on Saturday.

Next up, the Rochester Americans travel to Utica to face the Coments on October 21. They’ll then face a pair of home games on October 23 and 25 against Toronto and Syracuse. Kids tickets for the October 25th game are available for just $10 each.

It’s “Sweets in the Suites” night, where kids (12 & under) are encouraged to dress in costume and trick-or-treat during intermission. Kids will receive a free Amerks pillowcase, courtesy of Tops Friendly Markets, and there will be a Halloween celebration featuring fun characters.
