The Buffalo Sabres goal song is unique and fun . . . in small doses.  We want you to suggest ways they can liven home games up!

The Buffalo Sabres allowed their fans to vote for their goal song prior to the 2015-16 season.  Somehow, despite the fact that the song “Swords of a Thousand Men” made it all the way to the final round of voting – hello, a sabre is a type of sword, people! – the song “Let Me Clear My Throat” by DJ Kool became the official goal song of the Sabres.

I’ll admit: I was pretty excited when I heard DJ Kool was going to become a household name to a whole new generation of Buffalo Sabres fans.  And yeah, the handful of times I got to watch the Sabres play (and actually score) during the 2015-16 season, I was digging the song choice.  CBS Sports nailed it when they said,

"This shouldn’t make sense as a goal song, but oh my goodness it does."

Fast forward to this year, and . . . no.   Just as the Chicago Blackhawks blasting “Chelsea Dagger” every time they light lamp has grown to be one of the most annoying aspects of watching them play at home (and lord knows NBC Sports will continue to feature the ‘Hawks 20 times a year until long after everyone who reads this blog is dead and buried, resulting in millions of hockey fans having nightmares set to that damned song), so has hearing “Let Me Clear My Throat” played after each and every goal scored by the Sabres become stale.

It’s not that I hate the song; far from it.  It’s simply a matter of redundancy.  Hearing the same song played for every goal scored, regardless of who scored it and the circumstance in which it was scored, bores me.  No song perfectly captures every moment – for example, if the Buffalo Sabres are being shut out 4-0 but score a goal with under a minute to go, is “Let Me Clear My Throat” really the best choice?  Is that song going to inspire anyone in the 716 older than 10 to get up and dance while their team is getting their butts handed to them?

More from Sabre Noise

Probably not.

And what about last night’s come-from-behind overtime victory against the San Jose Sharks?  Sure, DJ Kool might have captured the mood of Evander Kane’s game-winner in overtime, but what about the goals scored during the comeback?  Wouldn’t “Thunderstruck” by ACDC have been a better choice for a few of those goals, given how quickly the Sabres erased a three-goal deficit?

I would love to see the Buffalo Sabres presentation department troll the opposition by playing a song like “Thunderstruck” after a team has coughed up a big lead.

And while we’re at it, why can’t individual players have their own goal song, just like individual wrestlers have their own entrance song?  I’m sure it is not easy juggling 10 or more goal songs, but if Jack Eichel is on a breakaway, can’t the guy (or gal) in charge of the goal song prepare Eichel’s specific song in case he scores?

In my dream world, yes he can!

Enough about me, though – we’re a fan blog!  We love to hear what you guys have think and have to say.  Even if individual goal songs are too much to ask for, what goal songs would you use if you were in charge of that portion of Buffalo Sabres home games?  Got a song you would use if the Sabres score the first goal?  Overtime winners?  Late goals scored when the Sabres are getting blown out?  Share your ideas below!
