The Buffalo Sabres claimed forward Remi Elie off of waivers from the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Elie adds needed forward depth as we get closer to opening night on Thursday.

Remi Elie was drafted in the second round of the 2013 NHL draft out of the London Knights organization of the Ontario Hockey League. Elie spent all of 2015-16 and part of 2016-17 with the Texas Stars of the AHL prior to joining the Stars full time last season.

Elie put up 6 goals and 8 assists with the Stars last season. Averaging a little over 10 minutes on ice per game, Elie was primarily a role player appearing on special teams only a handful of times last season. His primary action was on a defensive line with Radek Faksa and Tyler Pitlick.

The Buffalo Sabres suddenly had a need for forwards after sending Alexander Nylander back to Rochester and the news that Scott Wilson will be out for 8-10 weeks after having ankle surgery. Additionally, Johan Larsson is dealing with a foot injury and head coach Phil Housley has yet to announce if Larsson will be available for Thursday’s night game with the Boston Bruins. The good news is that it appears that Conor Sheary will be avilable up front and Zach Bogosian is ready to go on defense.

Remi Elie has been brought in to provide defensive depth at forward. Elie has never been a breakout offensive player at any level from Juniors, AHL, or the NHL. The lone exception is in the 2015-15 CHL playoffs when he put up 24 points in 20 games with the Erie Otters. In those playoffs he happened to be skating with Conor McDavid though.

According to capfriendly.com, Remi Elie is on a two-way contract at $735,000 and he will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

Remi Elie was one of 4 waiver claims on Tuesday morning: the Carolina Hurricans claimed goaltender Curtis McElhinney from Toronto, the Washington Capitals claimed forward Dmitrij Jaskin from the St Louis Blues, and the Philadelphia Flyers claimed goaltender Calvin Pickard from Toronto. Rochester Americans fans can be excited about defending Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies losing 2 of their goaltenders.

This pickup by the Buffalo Sabres should be the last significant move before the season opens tomorrow night. The Sabres first game will be on Thursday as they welcome division rival Boston to the KeyBank Center.
