Could we be seeing ads on Sabres jerseys in the near future?

The NHL is looking into potentially selling ads to be placed on player’s helmets. What would be the best companies to have ads on the Sabres helmets?

A recent report by Elliotte Friedman stated that the NHL is investigating selling ad space on player’s helmets. This idea was brought up on a recent Board of Governors call within the league. But I am not sure how I feel about this idea. And if it did happen, what companies would be best for the Buffalo Sabres to feature on their helmets?

I understand that sports is a business and the end goal is to make money, so from a business standpoint, it makes sense. We have seen the NBA include ads on their jerseys and they are very subtle and do not look bad at all. But I do not like the idea of including ads on NHL jerseys or helmets.

NHL jerseys have such a classic look to them, and I feel like including ads on a jersey would take away some of that classic feel. I understand that it isn’t that big of a deal either way, I would just prefer if they stayed away from including any corporate sponsors on jerseys or helmets.

But, say the NHL decides to include ads on helmets. What companies would be a good choice for the Buffalo Sabres?

KeyBank would be an obvious possibility as they are the namesake for the arena where Buffalo plays all their home games. But banks are kind of boring. If they are going to feature a company on their jersey, I would prefer if they included a company that is a little more “fun”.

There are a couple of food companies that have a huge presence in the Buffalo area. One of which is the General Mills factory right by the KeyBank Center. Imagine all the cereal themed giveaways the Sabres could do if General Mills came on as a jersey sponsor? And who doesn’t love cereal?

The other being Perry’s Ice Cream. Perry’s is already the official ice cream company of the Buffalo Sabres and even has a flavor name specifically for the Sabres, “Let’s Dough Buffalo”. Much like cereal, almost everyone loves ice cream.

I understand that this will be a money-driven decision. And no decision has been made as of now, it was just an idea that the NHL is looking into right now. But all I ask is if the Sabres do end up having an ad on their jersey or helmet, just make it something fun and interesting.
