The Sabres will look to bounce back tonight against the Capitals after last night’s 6-4 loss in Buffalo.

The Buffalo Sabres will look to have a quick turnaround tonight when they face the Washington Capitals for the second half of their back-to-back to open the season. The Sabres fell to the Capitals last night 6-4.

Buffalo looked very sloppy last night. But we have a lot of new pieces and it is the beginning of the season, the chemistry will get there with time. The Sabres dug themselves into a hole early on and could not get all the way out of it.

The Sabres will look for a better performance tonight vs the same team. The Capitals looked to be in mid-season form already. A tough early season task for Buffalo for sure.

A potential issue arising for the Sabres is the injury Eric Staal suffered. The newly acquired second-line center took an open-ice hit to the head midway through the third period and went straight to the locker room. Coach Krueger said after the game that Staal is day-to-day, but this morning Staal is said to be a game-time decision for tonight’s game.

If he is unable to go, the Sabres will obviously need to find a replacement on short notice to fill his role. Look for maybe Cody Eakin or even Dylan Cozens to step into the second-line center role. Or they could look to promote someone off the taxi squad and shift around the roster to make it work.

Also, look for Linus Ullmark to start in net for Buffalo tonight. This was likely the plan given this was a back-to-back and Ullmark missed some practices due to having to quarantine. And with Hutton having a less than stellar opening night start, hopefully we can see some quality play from Ullmark.
