The Buffalo Sabres finally return to the ice today after being on a COVID pause for over two weeks. The Sabres will take on the New York Islanders tonight at 7 pm in Buffalo at KeyBank Center. The Sabres were ready to play the Islanders on February 2nd before needing to quarantine.

The Islanders are winners of three of their last four games. They are coming off a 4-2 victory on Saturday against the Boston Bruins.

New York’s offense has been lacking so far this season. They average 2.46 goals per game, which ranks at 25th in the league. They only average 30.1 shots per game, which is 17th in the league. The only offensive stat that the Islanders have that is not below average is their power play, which is currently ranked at 15th best in the league.

The Islanders have found success through their defense to start this year. They allow the fifth-fewest shots on goal per game, the 11th fewest goals per game, and have the 12th best penalty kill. The Sabres will need to take advantage of all their opportunities against the Islanders throughout the game because they don’t come often.

The Sabres will be shorthanded tonight as they still have some players on their COVID list. Sam Reinhart is a game-time decision with an upper-body injury.

The goalie matchup is expected to be Semyon Varlamov for the Islanders and Linus Ullmark for the Sabres.
