Linus Ullmark shines in Sabres win over the Devils
The Buffalo Sabres got a much-needed win last night over the New Jersey Devils. The Sabres came away with a decisive 4-1 victory in New Jersey on Tuesday night. Linus Ullmark shined in the win for Buffalo, recording 41 saves in the victory.
Ullmark had his best game of the season by far last night and came 28 seconds away from his first shutout of the season. He looked very calm and confident from start to finish. If the Sabres can get more games like this from Ullmark, they could still make some noise in the East Division as it is still relatively early on in the season.
The first goal of the game came in the second period on a Victor Olofsson power play goal. This was Olofsson’s sixth power play goal this season. That ranks him just one goal off the league lead in that category.
Buffalo came out hot in the third period as they netted two goals in the first seven minutes. Rasmus Asplund scored his first goal of the season at the 5:16 mark on a very lovely deflection in front of the net, showcasing his hand-eye coordination.
Just over a minute after Asplund, Dylan Cozen sneaked one by Mackenzie Blackwood off a great feed from Taylor Hall for his third goal of the year. Cozens has looked great since returning from the league’s health and safety protocol. He has been paired up with Hall, and they have seemed to gell very well. That is definitely a pairing that the Sabres should keep together going forward.
The Devils got on the board late with a goal in the final minute, but it was too little too late at that point for New Jersey. The Sabres responded with a Cody Eakin empty-net goal as time expired to secure a big win.
This game and their next one against a struggling Devils team could be huge for Buffalo. The Sabres were in desperate need of gaining some momentum, and their performance tonight is undoubtedly something they could build off of. They will look to have another quality showing against the Devils on Thursday in Buffalo.
