In today’s matchup with the New York Islanders, a member of the Buffalo Sabres did something they had not done in over a year. Jeff Skinner scored his first goal of the season, and it was his first goal since February of 2020.

Skinner netted his goal at the 5:41 mark of the third period off assists from Casey Mittelstadt and Curtis Lazar. Jeff Skinner has been the focus of a lot of talk around the Sabres and how he has gotten off to such a slow start this season. So getting his first goal of the season is a massive relief for Skinner.

After an even first period, the Sabres seemed to make no adjustments going into the second and gave up three unanswered goals in the period. Skinner’s goal provided a spark for the Sabres as they tried to mount a comeback in the third period. Colin Miller scored a goal just four minutes after Skinner’s goal to cut the Islanders lead to only one with half a period left.

Buffalo almost completed the comeback as they were within one after their two third-period goals. But all the momentum they had after their two quick goals was quickly taken away. New York scored two more times to put it out of reach to bury the Sabres for the third straight game.

Buffalo lost their third consecutive game to the Islanders and extended their losing streak to seven games. Potentially even more impressive than losing seven games in a row, the Sabres lost by the score of 5-2 in their last three games to New York.

After another brutal performance, especially after GM Kevyn Adams voiced his displeasures on Friday afternoon, changes cannot be too far out for the Sabres. Head coach Ralph Krueger has been on the hot seat for the past week at least, and his seat is growing hotter by the day at this point.
