The Buffalo Sabres play against the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time this season tonight. The Sabres played their best game in over two weeks on Tuesday night but still fell to the Flyers in a shootout. Buffalo is still in the midst of their massive losing streak, as it is up to eight games.

Buffalo’s offense has been almost non-existent since they returned from their forced break due to a COVID outbreak within the team. The Sabres are now averaging 2.25 goals per game, which ranks 30th in the NHL. And the team isn’t making up for their lack of offense with quality defensive play. Buffalo is allowing 3.25 goals per game, which ranks them at 27th in the league in that category.

The lack of star Jack Eichel will not help Buffalo increase those offensive numbers either. The Sabres captain will be out for at least a week with an upper-body injury. Eichel seemed to get this injury on Sunday at the end of the Sabres game against the Islanders.

Without Eichel, Dylan Cozens got his first start as a first-line center alongside Taylor Hall and Sam Reinhart. This line produced two even-strength goals in the first period of Buffalo’s game on Tuesday. There is no reason to believe that the top line would be anything other than this.
