Not only did the Buffalo Sabres lose last night, but they also had multiple players suffer injuries during the game. Both injuries occurred in the third period amidst the Sabres come-back effort, which ultimately fell short as they lost 5-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The first injury, and the more severe-looking of the two, happened just about three minutes into the third period. Penguins center Zachary Aston-Reese planted a very unnecessary hit on Sabres rookie stand-out Dylan Cozens. Cozens had already passed the puck up the ice when Aston-Reese sent Cozens flying into the boards. Colin Miller immediately stood up for Cozens as he dropped his gloves and fought Aston-Reese.

Dylan had to be helped off the ice as he looked very uneasy when he got back to his feet. Amazingly, this hit somehow did not warrant a penalty, and even-strength play continued. The Penguins scored less than a minute after play resumed after the fight. Reports from Sabres practice today say that Cozens was not a participant.

The second injury came just a few minutes after Cozens left the ice. Chad Ruhwedel collided with Rasmus Dahlin, and Dahlin seemed to get the worst of the collision. Ruhwedel looked like he was going for a big hit on Dahlin but missed and took out his legs instead. Rasmus immediately grabbed for his knee after the hit.

This hit, just like the hit on Cozens, was surprisingly not a penalty. Dahlin was able to get back up and skate off the ice under his own power, but he was clearly in some discomfort. Rasmus participated in practice today, so luckily, this injury was not lingering.

Eichel to be out at least a week, maybe longer. dark. Next

We are still waiting for an update on Cozens, but it seems evident that he will not be playing tomorrow night. It was clear that the Sabers players did not appreciate the hit on Dylan, so it would not be surprising if the game tomorrow gets a little chippy.
