The Buffalo Sabres lost in regulation to the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday afternoon by the score of 3 to 2. Since the Sabres failed to get a point yesterday, they became the first team in the league this year to be eliminated from playoff contention.

Despite this, the Sabres are back in action this afternoon to finish this weekend back-to-back against the Penguins. Buffalo’s come-back effort came up just short yesterday. Goals from Tage Thompson and Casey Mittelstadt and 38 saves from Dustin Tokarski were not enough as the Sabres fell by one goal.

A lot of players have performed better since Buffalo’s mid-season coaching change, but maybe no one has picked up their performance more under the new coach than Mittelstadt. Casey has seven goals and two assists over his last ten games. We are witnessing the best stretch of NHL hockey that Mittelstadt has ever played. If he can keep this up, he will be a valuable piece to the future success of Buffalo.

With the news of Linus Ullmark being listed as week-to-week with a lower-body injury, we may not see Ullmark play again this season. Michael Houser is expected to get the start in net for Buffalo as they are still faced with extremely thin goalie depth.
