With the 2021 NHL Draft approaching quickly, teams are starting to see how they can maximize their draft haul. The Buffalo Sabres may be the team most in need of a successful draft this year. And with all of the veteran players that could be on their way out of Buffalo via trade before the draft, the Sabres could enter the draft with a lot of opportunities.

There have been numerous reports that the Sabres may be preparing to have two top ten picks in this year’s draft. Both Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News and NHL reporter Elliotte Friedman have mentioned this as a possibility.

With the Sabres willing to move on from players such as Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, and Rasmus Ristolainen, it is no surprise that Buffalo is expecting to add more draft capital this year. Eichel and Reinhart especially could be the ones to bring some more top draft picks to Buffalo.

There are a handful of teams in the top ten in the draft order that could very well make a push to trade for one of the Sabres star forwards. Teams such as the Columbus Blue Jackets (fifth pick), the Los Angeles Kings (eighth pick), and the Vancouver Canucks (ninth pick) are just a few teams that could be in on either Reinhart or Eichel before the draft rolls around.

If the Sabres move on from either Eichel or Reinhart before the beginning of the 2021 NHL Draft, which is scheduled for July 23rd, they will most likely get at least one first-round pick for this year. A rebuilding team’s best friend is draft picks, and if the Sabres are going to move on from some players, getting more top ten picks in return could make the decision to trade even easier.

Buffalo already owns the first overall pick. Many believe this pick will be used on defenseman Owen Power. Kevyn Adams seems to be ready to take the best available players regardless of position, which is a strategy they need to use. Adding another top ten pick could really help the Sabres rebuilding efforts.
