Finally. Something the Buffalo Sabres could be good at. We have officially reached draft season. Sadly for Sabres fans, this is the time of the season that is looked forward to the most. Buffalo has not seen the playoffs in a decade, so fans are left looking forward to the draft lottery and hoping the Sabres can make some good picks in the draft.

The Sabres were the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention during last season, so the fanbase’s focus has been shifted to the draft for a long time. Luckily for Buffalo, they won the draft lottery for the first time since 2018. So now the Sabres own the first overall pick for the fourth time in franchise history.

With the first night of the draft scheduled for July 23rd, Kevyn Adams and his staff have just a couple of weeks to decide who to draft with the number one overall pick. As of right now, all signs point to Owen Power going first overall to Buffalo. But two weeks is a lot of time, and things could change.

The Sabres could be extremely active on the trade market over the next few weeks leading up to the draft. There has been an abundance of trade rumors surrounding players such as Sam Reinhart, Jack Eichel, and Rasmus Ristolainen.

If Buffalo were to trade any of these players before the draft, they would likely be getting some 2021 NHL Draft picks in return. Buffalo has already said that they are preparing for a case in which they have two picks in the top ten in this upcoming draft. For this to become a reality, it would require either an Eichel or maybe even a Reinhart trade.

Regardless of Buffalo’s moves before the draft, they are still in a good spot with the number one overall pick and a quality young core of players. But fans should expect to see some big moves that involve the Sabres coming over the next 15 days.
