A name that is very familiar to long-term Buffalo Sabres fans is back within the Sabres organization. Former Sabre Michael Peca was added to the coaching staff of the AHL affiliate to Buffalo, the Rochester Americans. It was announced today that Peca will be the assistant coach for the Rochester Americans.

Peca played for the Sabres for five seasons from 1995 to 2000. Over those five seasons, Michael played in 363 games in Buffalo and had 217 points on 96 goals and 121 assists. He played a total of 14 years over the course of his entire NHL career, playing for the Canucks, Sabres, Islanders, Oilers, Maple Leafs, and Blue Jackets. Peca is a two-time winner of the Selke Trophy.

This is not Michael’s first coaching endeavor either. He has been coaching hockey since 2012. He started out as the head coach of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, who play in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. He also spent last season as a player development coach for the Washington Capitals. And now he is back within the Sabres organization as the assistant coach in the AHL for the Rochester Americans.

Peca will join head coach Seth Appert and try to have a more successful season than the Americans had last season. Rochester finished sixth out of seven teams in the North Division. In 29 games played in the shortened season, the Americans finished the year with a record of 11-15-2. But with how many players that the Sabres pulled up to Buffalo from Rochester throughout the year, it was tough for the Americans to find roster consistency.
