Fans of the Buffalo Sabres deserve better than this

As we inch closer to the start of another Buffalo Sabres season, my heart goes out to Buffalo fans; honestly, you deserve better.

I can sympathize as a lifelong Philadelphia Flyer fan, who also feels devoid of championships (over 17,000 days since the last one but who’s counting, oh, and sorry, it happened to be against the Sabres). But that’s a story for the Broad Street Buzz on FanSided.

As you probably know if you are reading this, the Sabres have never won a cup. They haven’t even made the playoffs in over a decade; that’s simply unacceptable.

It’s not just the lack of a championship, but the false promises by the owner, Terry Pegula. When he bought the team he said, “Starting today the Buffalo Sabres’ reason for existence will be to win a Stanley Cup.” The Sabres are about as far from a Stanley Cup as any team in the NHL. And they continue to make questionable decisions, most recently, surrounding their star player Jack Eichel.

Buffalo is very much a hockey town (although there are plenty of Bills fans, especially with their recent success). They should have a contending team to enjoy, not one that rotates through coaches and quality players like inches of snow pile up in the winter.

The hard-nosed, committed Sabres fans should be able to enter the 2021-2022 with some semblance of hope for a playoff berth but that seems very unlikely. The Sabres as an organization need to be held accountable and quickly turn the tide before becoming an afterthought in a town that loves its hockey.

Although we get a bad rap in Philly, we are experts at letting our teams know where they rank; when the Flyers play poorly we boo, stop attending games, and we don’t shy away from spewing venom at management. I’m not telling Sabres’ fans to do the same but only to know that I sympathize with their situation and am rooting for them to succeed (just not against the Flyers!).
