As the Buffalo Sabres continue their rebuild, it is important to keep their young core together as much as possible. David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has reported that the Sabres have been in talks with three of their restricted free agents over the past few weeks to get a deal done. The three players that are the subject of these talks are Casey Mittelstadt, Rasmus Dahlin, and Henri Jokiharju.

In what has been a relatively quiet offseason in terms of bringing people back to Buffalo and signing contract extensions, these are three players that the Sabres should absolutely try and lock up long-term. The report also mentions that the Sabres and Mittelstadt’s camp have talked very recently, so it should not be a surprise if they strike a deal very soon.

After losing out on bringing back their only quality goaltender in Linus Ullmark, it would be a welcome sign for Sabres fans to see the team sign some young talent to some multiple-year deals. And with what we saw from these younger players after Don Granato took over as head coach, it would be a smart move for Buffalo to keep these young players around.

With Mittelstadt and Jokiharju at only 22-years-old and Dahlin even younger at 21-years-old, these three should be a mainstay in Buffalo’s young core over the next multiple seasons. Add in players like Dylan Cozens, Owen Power, and Jack Quinn, the Sabres could have a decent young group of players in Buffalo in a couple of years.

In an offseason that has been filled with mostly losing players, signing these three restricted free agents are three moves the Sabres should have at the top of their priorities at the moment. They have so much cap space that money is no issue for them, so there is really no reason why a deal can not get done between Buffalo and these players.
