Some good news was a very welcome sight for the Buffalo Sabres and their fans over the past week. The Sabres signed two of their young talents to three-year contracts each. Both Casey Mittelstadt and Henri Jokiharju were restricted free agents in Buffalo, and both will stay in Buffalo for at least the next three seasons.

The Sabres have now locked up two of their three young restricted free agents. We are still waiting on Rasmus Dahlin to be signed to a contract extension. Signing Dahlin to a long-term contract needs to be priority number one in Buffalo for the rest of the offseason.

If Dahlin and the Sabres can agree to a hefty contract extension, then it would be hard to argue against that Buffalo has some of, if not the best young talent in the league. Even though fans have yet to see it all come together on the ice, having so much quality talent this early in their careers is definitely something for fans to cheer about.

If you look at the roster in Buffalo and see what players will be the ones that the Sabres hope to keep for the long-term and build around, the average age is very promising. Between Dahlin, Mittelstadt, Jokiharju, Dylan Cozens, Arttu Ruotsalainen, and Victor Olofsson, the average age is only just over 22 years old. And if somehow the Sabres could work something out with Jack Eichel to get him to want to stay in Buffalo, he is still only 25 and has plenty of years left in his NHL career.

But even without Eichel, Buffalo’s young core is not something to look over. Obviously, it will take some time for chemistry to build and it could be a few seasons before fans really start to see what this young group is capable of. But if Sabres fans want a silver lining to their recent struggles, this is certainly it.
