What should the Buffalo Sabres do with Victor Olofsson?
Victor Olofsson has been very productive as of late, which begs the question: should the Buffalo Sabres trade him in the offseason?
It’s safe to say that forward Victor Olofsson is back to being the lethal player that Buffalo Sabres fans know and love. According to Hockey Reference, Olofsson has 20 goals and 24 assists in 68 games played this season. After a slow start to the season, he’s been one of Buffalo’s best players down the stretch.
With that being said, it begs the question: What should Buffalo do with Victor?
Yes, he has been very productive as of late. But in the offseason, trading Olofsson will allow general manager Kevyn Adams to possibly bring a better player onto the team.
Note that Olofsson will be a restricted free agent (RFA). So the Sabres would need to extend a qualifying offer to retain negotiation rights. That being said, let’s take a look from both sides of the equation.
Here are the Buffalo Sabres options for Victor Olofsson
Let’s start with keeping Olofsson. The good thing about keeping him is he’s already familiar with his teammates and the system. For the last couple of seasons, he is labeled as a key player for the Sabres especially on the power play. In fact, that’s where Olofsson is most dangerous.
So if Buffalo does intend to keep him, they would be keeping a good top six player and a deadly power play weapon. With the reasons to keep him around done, let’s talk about why they trade him.
Yes, you are letting a key asset go to another team. However, the Sabres could definitely land a good player to replace Olofsson. There are definitely teams out there who could use a player like him. The main question remains: What does Buffalo do?
If you keep him then you’re keeping a stud player. If you let him go, then you’re possibly getting a solid player in free agency. It’s a two way street but we’ll see what happens in the offseason.
