Major offseason rumors are dominating the Buffalo Sabres headlines just one week after the regular season ended on April 29th.

Like all NHL teams, rumors surround the Buffalo Sabres, mainly regarding their goaltending situation. I have written several pieces already about what the Sabres might do at goaltender, and it ranged from re-signing their own players to signing an overlooked stopgap to even bringing on a fast-rising player.

General manager Kevyn Adams stressed the need to address the goaltending position in the offseason. But he also said he does not want to “box out” or “block” Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen or Devon Levi. This indicates he plans on re-signing Luukkonen and that he expects Levi to be in the system either after his season at Northeastern ends, or for 2023-24.

However, we also need to expect the possible smokescreen, something Adams and the other 31 NHL general managers will throw. So don’t be surprised if he brings in an established, fast-rising talent like a Ville Husso.

The Buffalo Sabres 2022 offseason rumor mill: Victor Olofsson, new defenseman

It is no secret the Sabres want to bring back Olofsson after his stellar final two months. NHL Rumors reported that an extension will take time regarding Olofsson, and that he understands the process.

I’m not worried about signing a deal here quick. I know it’s going to probably go all summer maybe before we figure something out. I’m all good with that. I know what it’s like now and there’s nothing that needs to be rushed.” – Victor Olofsson, via NHL Rumors.

The Sabres must hand Olofsson a $3.25 million qualifying offer, but logistics will definitely play a key role in whether they ultimately retain Olofsson. It is no secret J.J. Peterka and Jack Quinn will be playing in Buffalo next season, and letting Olofsson go gives them a clear path to see substantial ice time at winger.

Adams may consider bringing back RFA Jacob Bryson, keeping the young defensive pairings intact. However, he also realizes how important it would be to add a veteran to supplement Owen Power. If there is another possible prize free agent Adams may go after, it will be at defenseman. The question is, who?

More. Ville Husso would be a prize free agent. light

This is the fun time of the year to make predictions and openly wonder where the front office is headed via free agency, roster transactions, and the draft. But overall, we all need to remember one thing: Expect the unexpected, and take everything Adams says with a grain of salt.
