The Buffalo Sabres have more cap space than any team. Should they use it to sign Johnny Gaudreau? Here are both sides of the argument.

Going into the offseason, the Buffalo Sabres have the most cap space than any team in the NHL. Looking at the free agent market, there are a lot of good names out there. Before going any further, a lot of these players can get contract extensions before free agency starts so this article might not mean anything.

Anyways, Johnny Gaudreau from the Calgary Flames is one of the big names who’s set to be a free agent. In this article, we’re going to have a debate about whether or not the Sabres should sign Johnny Hockey. We’ll take a look at both sides of this argument.

Why the Buffalo Sabres should sign Johnny Gaudreau

Let’s start with why the Sabres SHOULD sign Gaudreau. Looking at his stats according to Hockey-Reference, his whole career has been back and forth when it comes to his stats but last season was a good one for the Flames forward. In all 82 games played last year, he scored 40 goals and registered 75 assists with Calgary.

It’s the third time in his career where he’s scored 30 goals or more but the last time he scored at least 30 goals was during the 2018-2019 season where he scored 36 goals.

Even though he’s been up and down, he’s still a solid player and he could help the Sabres. You can insert him somewhere in the top six but general manager Kevyn Adams would most likely have to move a player.
