With free agency approaching, the Buffalo Sabres have money to spend. Should they sign André Burakovsky or look elsewhere?
With the NHL season officially over, it’s officially the offseason. And with the NHL Draft and free agency approaching, the Buffalo Sabres can make the team better. According to Spotrac, the Sabres have the second most cap space in the league at the moment so they can definitely land some more talent to help out the current core.
We’re going to take a look at some possible targets for Buffalo. The first player we’ll be talking about is André Burakovsky of the new Stanley Cup champions Colorado Avalanche. Burakovsky would be a great addition to this Sabres team. He can be somewhere in the top six, most likely on the second line.
Should the Buffalo Sabres target Burakovsky?
According to Hockey-Reference, he scored 22 goals and registered 39 assists in 80 games played this season with the Avalanche. During the postseason in 12 games played, he had 3 goals and 5 assists. As mentioned earlier, this would be a great player to have on the roster and Sabres fans should be thrilled if general manager Kevyn Adams could sign him.
As you can see in the tweet above from The Charging Buffalo, Adams wants to add not only bottom six players but top six players as well. As mentioned earlier in this article, Burakovsky would be a perfect addition to the top six. He is 27 years old, so he is still relatively young.
If he was offered a contract, it makes sense if it was a 3 or 4 year contract. It’s just an estimate but if the Sabres were to sign Burakovsky, that length could definitely be a possibility. Obviously he could be re-signed by the Avalanche but if not then this is a player Buffalo should definitely target.
We’ll see how it plays out in the next couple of weeks but if Burakovsky does indeed sign with the Sabres then that would be a great start in what could be a very busy offseason for Buffalo.
