Victor Olofsson and the Buffalo Sabres are close to getting a contract extension done. Here are the full details and how it would impact the team.

With the NHL Draft and free agency fast approaching, it’s that time of year for NHL fans to be constantly refreshing their social media feed to see if their favorite team are doing anything. For Buffalo Sabres fans, there is some news about one of their core players getting a contract extension.

Elliotte Freidman shed some light on the Victor Olofsson situation. In his 32 Thoughts article, Friedman said Olofsson and the Sabres are “making progress on a contract extension”. This is great news for both Buffalo and Victor. After a slow start to last season, he finished the year strong.

According to Hockey-Reference, Oloffson finished last year with 20 goals and 29 assists in 72 games played. From October 14th to the 31st, Olofsson scored 5 goals. After that, he didn’t score a goal until February 15th. Despite going that long without scoring a single goal, he found his game and had a pretty good second half of the season.

Olofsson has been a topic of conversation for awhile now amongst the fanbase. Whether to trade him or extend him, it looks the answer to that question will be answered soon.

If by chance Buffalo and Olofsson do agree on a deal, this is fantastic for both sides. As mentioned earlier, he’s one of the core players on the Sabres roster. So locking him up would be great for Buffalo because they’re not losing another star player.

As you can see in the tweet at the beginning of the article and countless times on this site, Buffalo has tons of money to spend. Even though some fans want them to go big name hunting, the Sabres need some of that money for their own players such as Victor, Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens and others.

We’ll see what takes place in the next week or so but Sabres fans should be thrilled if Olofsson is extended.
