The Buffalo Sabres enjoyed the liberty of having three picks in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft. Let’s break down each new player individually.

The Buffalo Sabres had three picks in the first round of the 2022 NHL Draft and while it is too early to really provide an overall grade, most in NHL spheres say Kevyn Adams and company did a good job. My reaction was different, as I praised the Savoie and Kulich picks, but I was rather critical regarding Ostlund.

None of us can really judge the returns until later on. What we can do is go through each draft pick, outline their strengths and weaknesses, and make a prediction as to where they will end up in 2022-23. But first, a spoiler alert is necessary: None of the golden trio will be playing in the NHL this season.

Buffalo Sabres draft picks: Breaking down Matthew Savoie

Strengths

Savoie ranked fifth overall in TCB’s 2022 NHL Draft Guide. So it is always a strength when you own such a high ranking. And he backed up that ranking with sound production, scoring 90 times in 65 contests in a campaign that included 35 goals.

He is also a fast skater who knows how to make plays for himself or if it isn’t there, create scoring opportunities for teammates. Savoie’s on-ice awareness and NHL-caliber shot also help him spread the puck around or if he takes it upon himself, find twine.

Weaknesses

Savoie is just 5’9, 179lb, and lack of size definitely hurt his stock. He also lacks two-way tendencies, so his defense needs to improve for the upcoming season. But really, Savoie’s downside is nothing more than nitpicking.

2022-23 Prediction

Most likely, Savoie returns to the WHL for another round with the Winnipeg Ice. Depending on how well he develops, he may end up at least contending for a roster spot on the Buffalo Sabres in 2023-24.
