Brandon Biro is one of the more obscure players the Buffalo Sabres extended. But the former undrafted free agent has enjoyed some prominence.
With all the news surrounding last week’s NHL Draft, the Buffalo Sabres developmental camp, and free agency, it means lesser news will sometimes slip through the cracks. One of which involves forward Brandon Biro, who signed a two-year, $762,500 extension with the organization.
Biro, formerly an undrafted free agent, signed with the Sabres in 2020 and scored just five points in 15 games that season. He saw his playing time increase substantially in 2021-22, scoring 41 points (12 goals) in 48 contests while he also played in his very first NHL game against the Montreal Canadiens in February.
What does Brandon Biro bring to the Buffalo Sabres organization?
Since Biro got a crack at the NHL last season, look for him to compete for a spot on the lower lines, but odds are greater that he will once again return to Rochester for another stint with the Rochester Americans. And while this may be the case, he will secure a spot on one of the top scoring lines in Rochester.
You can further expect Biro to further hone his game in the AHL next season, but you may see the winger play in a few NHL games if injuries hit the Sabres once more. If this is the case, expect him to play exclusively on the lower lines as he becomes more acclimated to the NHL.
Overall, the Sabres interest in retaining Biro shows he remains one of the team’s higher-end prospects, despite his draft status. But with the team’s roster already so full at forward, it will be tough to project him breaking into the lineup unless he has a stellar training camp and preseason.
Before joining the organization in 2020, Biro starred at Penn State University where he scored 116 points (41 goals) in 138 games. The 2022-23 season will mark Biro’s third in Rochester.
