Are any Buffalo Sabres worth drafting in fantasy hockey in 2022?

The Buffalo Sabres don’t have anyone sitting ultra-high in fantasy hockey rankings. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep an eye on them. 

The Buffalo Sabres were not the hottest team in 2021-22 when it came to fantasy hockey. So it is only natural to believe that, at least early on, they are not exactly a hotbed for the game. However, there are a few players at least worth tracking, and that will be the topic of today’s discussion.

Every year, NHL.com sings the praises of all 32 of its teams from a fantasy hockey standpoint, and the Sabres are no exception. So let’s outline four players you need to track before draft day, and perhaps snag one of the following in the middle-to-late rounds if you believe they will put up respectable numbers.

The Buffalo Sabres don’t possess the most prolific scorers in fantasy hockey, but players like Owen Power can change that.

NHL.com placed Power 44th in their point projection ranking and in the top 30 as far as NHL defensemen are concerned. Overall, only Matty Beniers ranks higher than Power among all NHL rookies. One reason Power gets such a high ranking stems from the output he enjoyed during his eight-game cameo. Another reason is the fact he will continue to receive 20-plus minutes of ice time and he figures to become a key component on the power play.

The All-Star

Another former first overall pick, Rasmus Dahlin, comes in at #50 in NHL.com’s point projection. And when you enjoy a breakout year the previous season while scoring 53 points and 13 goals, you are going to turn heads. A young player, Dahlin is still developing. So don’t be surprised if someone “reaches” for Dahlin in your fantasy league this season.

The High-Risk, High Reward Type

Tage Thompson ranks as the Buffalo Sabres top forward per NHL.com, who placed him at #55 in point projections. Thompson’s size makes him an enviable darkhorse for any fantasy hockey roster, but he does come with a buyer-beware tag, given his one-year wonder status. Ultimately, Thompson could repeat or even best his fantasy output from last season, and his most recent numbers show it. But he can also be a major bust.

Overall, he is a high-risk, high-reward pick. But his numbers were beyond encouraging. If you think Thompson can augment his production from last season, snag him in the later rounds.

The Sleeper

NHL.com listed Alex Tuch as their final candidate, placing him just behind Thompson at #56 in point projection. Tuch excelled in Buffalo and became a great rotational piece in fantasy following his debut with the Sabres. Expect to see Tuch play in all situations, and now that the reliable winger has a year with the system, he could very well reward any fantasy owner willing to take a chance on him.

While these four players may find a home on every fantasy hockey roster in a league comprising eight or more teams, they are not the only players to consider. In a future article, I will break down seven fantasy hockey sleepers for 2022-23.
