The Buffalo Sabres have solid depth at defenseman. But they are still among the favorites to sign seasoned veteran P.K. Subban.

The mainstream sports media just won’t learn. General manager Kevyn Adams has a plan and he is sticking to it, regardless of the amount of cap space he and the Buffalo Sabres have. So far in this waning offseason, we have heard rumors about trading for Patrick Kane, Matthew Tkachuk, and signing big-name free agents.

And it seems like potentially signing P.K. Subban is the next big story in the saga. For some strange reason, since the Sabres already have seven NHL-caliber defenseman slated to make the roster and at least two more (Lawrence Pilut, Kale Clague) figuring to start the season in Rochester.

Will the Buffalo Sabres pursue P.K. Subban given their incredible depth at defenseman?

The odds of the Sabres pursuing and signing Subban are between slim and none. Unless one of their top defensemen injures themselves during a workout and is forced to miss time, there is no way it’s happening, so this is a rumor I wouldn’t buy too much into.

Now, if an injury bug again bites the Sabres and the defensive rotation takes the brunt of it, would they go out and sign Subban? At that point, I believe he would be an option, considering he doesn’t go elsewhere first.

Overall, don’t expect Subban to come to the Queen City. There is far too much young talent on the Sabres defensive rotation for Kevyn Adams to call for the veteran’s services. And while Subban would make an excellent mentor for the Sabres rotation, there is not enough room to add him to an already crowded unit at this point.

I’ve said it so many times, but I will reiterate this: The Sabres will go into the 2022-23 season with the players they already got. And for a team looking to build on the success of last season’s final two months, it should be a breath of fresh air.
