Will the Buffalo Sabres bring in one last puzzle piece before training camp begins in September? They may take a chance on Derick Brassard.

The Hockey Writers projected that the Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, and the New York Islanders are in the best position to land Derick Brassard, who actually spent a good portion of last season in Philadelphia. And while Brassard is well past his prime, he has morphed into a solid depth player capable of winning face-offs.

While the Sabres already have Vinnie Hinostroza and Riley Sheahan, it is very possible that they take a chance on a seasoned veteran like Brassard and bring him into camp. Brassard, who will turn 35 in September, would also make another solid veteran presence.

Derick Brassard would be a good fourth-line or rotational option for the Buffalo Sabres if they sign him

If general manager Kevyn Adams decides to sign Brassard, look for Sheahan to start the season in the AHL. Brassard and Hinostroza would then make up the key rotational pieces who will see extended playing time in the event of an injury.

While I’m not one to relentlessly sign free agents, Brassard would be a smart, sensible move. With over $20 million in cap space, Adams is not breaking the bank if he signed a role player like Brassard to a one-year deal to win face-offs when rotating into the lineup.

No one can say whether the Sabres are truly interested in signing Brassard. But this is one of those situations where it should surprise no one if he signs and competes for a roster spot in training camp.

Michael DeRosa of The Hockey Writers believes Brassard will compete for a place on the bottom six, but barring something catastrophic in training camp like a performance meltdown or an injury, the Sabres, for the most part, are set, with veterans like Rasmus Asplund, Dylan Cozens, Kyle Okposo, and Zemgus Girgensons likely to start the season on the third and fourth lines.

As mentioned, Hinostroza and Sheahan are already there. Plus, we cannot forget about Jack Quinn or J.J. Petreka. So it would be tough, at least early on, to see Brassard anywhere other than rotating in and out early in the year if he signed.
