General manager Kevyn Adams gave an update on the Buffalo Sabres captaincy situation. Here is an update and who might be in the running.

Happy first day of training camp Sabres fans!! We are one step closer to getting the 2022-2023 regular season underway. The Sabres are looking to build off to what was considered an improving season last year. With camp officially underway, general manager Kevyn Adams who just got a contract extension yesterday, dropped some news for us.

Earlier this morning, Adams shedded some light on a question Buffalo fans have talked about at least once all offseason, who will be the next captain? During his press conference, Adams announced that the team will have a captain this season and an announcement will be made before the regular season starts.

The Buffalo Sabres great team captaincy carousel

As we all know, Buffalo stripped Jack Eichel of his captaincy then traded him to the Vegas Golden Knights a couple of months later. Ever since they stripped the former captain, the Sabres didn’t name a new captain at all last year. They had three assistant captains and decided to stick with that during the 2021-2022 season.

So with that being said, who’s going to be the next captain of the Buffalo Sabres? When it comes to the candidates, I predict that Kyle Okposo, Jeff Skinner, Alex Tuch, Rasmus Dahlin, and Zemgus Girgensons will be in the conversation. All of those guys have good leadership and we heard about them being terrific leaders during last year.

If you ask me, I think the next captain will be Okposo because it’s the most obvious choice. Okposo had a good bounce back season last year but ever since he’s been in Buffalo, he has always been a leader. Even though most fans like myself would love to see Tuch getting the C on his jersey, Kyle is truly deserving of it.

Adams said they’ll make an announcement just before the regular season. I think the team will name the captain and the two assistant captains after the last preseason game. Like Adams said, they want to see the leadership in the locker room for a few weeks before deciding the captaincy.
