Today, the Buffalo Sabres revealed their opening night roster for the upcoming season. Were there any surprises? Here is a breakdown.

We have made it folks, the Buffalo Sabres will play hockey this week. It’s only Tuesday and even though the team doesn’t play until Thursday, they had to finalize their opening night roster. A day after revealing their captains for the season, the team released their roster for Thursday night.

In this article, we’re going to break down the roster and I will talk about if there were any or no surprises that stood out to me. We’ll start with the forwards, defensemen after, and the goalies to wrap it up.

Breakdown of the Buffalo Sabres 2022-23 roster

Forwards:

Jeff Skinner, Tage Thompson, Victor Olofsson,

Jack Quinn, Casey Mittelstadt, Alex Tuch,

Peyton Krebs, Dylan Cozens, JJ Peterka,

Zemgus Girgensons, Rasmus Asplund, Kyle Okposo,

Vinnie Hinostroza, Anders Bjork

Defensemen:

Rasmus Dahlin, Mattias Samuelsson,

Henri Jokiharju, Owen Power,

Jacob Bryson, Ilya Lyubushkin, Casey Fitzgerald

Goaltenders: Craig Anderson,  Eric Comrie

Injured Reserve: Riley Sheahan

So there you have, this is the roster Buffalo will have Thursday night. A couple of things stood out to me, let’s start with who made the team. JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn both played well enough to make the roster and it’s good to see.

The Sabres got a small sample size of these two players but it was a very small sample. Jack and JJ are well known by the fanbase and I can tell the fans are excited to see them. I’m very excited to see these two play and they’ll start the 2022-2023 season in the NHL.

A name that didn’t make the team and will start the season in Rochester is goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. I know Sabres fans want UPL up here but I think this is the right move. Even though he’s been with the Amerks for awhile, he’ll be in Buffalo soon.

At Craig Anderson’s age, it’s possible we could see Luukkonen at some point during the season. Eric Comrie is the wild card here. He’s a question mark because he was a backup with the Winnipeg Jets, so this is his chance to prove that he can be a starter.

If for whatever reason Anderson and Comrie don’t work out, UPL will be ready to go. He has some experience in the NHL and he’s a good option to turn to if you need another goaltender.

Thursday will be here before you know it and I’m excited to see if this team can build off a good second half of last season. With this group, I think the team will take the next step. While the next 7 months are unknown, I think this team is ready to prove themselves.
