The Buffalo Sabres lost their second game in a row thanks to the Montreal Canadiens. Here are a few thoughts on the game.

The Buffalo Sabres are now 4-3-0 on the young season as they dropped their second game in a row against the Montreal Canadiens. Even though Buffalo outshot Montreal 45-34, the Canadiens found a way to win the game in the end. It was one of those losses where it was more frustrating than a blowout loss.

For me, the most frustrating part was the effort the Sabres put in. In my opinion, Buffalo looked good. That was my biggest takeaway from the game last night, it was a losing effort but the Sabres played like they should’ve won that game. I’ll give credit where it’s due because Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault was impressive.

Something else that the Sabres need to work on that I noticed, not taking penalties. Even though they killed off all three penalties, this is becoming a bad habit for Buffalo. The penalty kill has been very good so far but as the season goes along, Buffalo will be facing better power plays so they need to do much better when it comes to discipline.

Buffalo Sabres still have a lot of improvements to make

Speaking of power plays, the Sabres power play unit needs to improve. Even though they successfully converted on one last night, it’s very surprising to see the team struggle with the man advantage. On paper, the power play unit should be much better.

On paper and on the ice are two different things obviously, but Buffalo needs to figure it out on the man advantage. I know it’s still early on the season, but I’m starting to get a little concerned on that topic.

To wrap up the article on a good note, one positive thing I noticed was Dylan Cozens. He scored his third goal of the season last night and with five points on the year, Cozens has looked good. I did predict for him to have a breakout season this year, so it’s nice to see him have success and hopefully he can keep it going.
