The Buffalo Sabres won in thrilling fashion against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night after trailing by two goals in the third period.

At the 10-minute mark of the third, the Buffalo Sabres found themselves being outscored 11-3 dating back to Tuesday night’s embarrassing loss to the Seattle Kraken. The Sabres, however, did something they haven’t done in a while: They rallied from being down by multiple goals in the third and stole a win from the Chicago Blackhawks.

This team has pulled off some epic victories as of late against Chicago. Remember the 6-5 win last season following a four-goal deficit early in the second period? Or the overtime win in Rick Jeanneret’s final broadcast?

But do you remember December 11th, 2018, when the Sabres, inside the KeyBank Center, pulled off a stunner against the Los Angeles Kings? Buffalo, who enjoyed a red-hot November that year, faced off with a subpar Kings team. But that didn’t stop Los Angeles from taking a 3-1 lead into the third period.

Buffalo Sabres vs. LA Kings, December 11th, 2018

Saturday night’s win vs. the Blackhawks may have sparked de ja vu in some, given the eerily similar vibes the game brought. In the third period of the December 2018 game, none other than Jack Eichel scored at the 3:47 mark on a power play goal, assisted by, you guessed it, Sam Reinhart, and Rasmus Ristolainen.

Less than four minutes later, John Larsson tied the game at three with Lawrence Pilut and Evan Rodrigues logging the helpers. The game remained a deadlock at 3-3 until the final whistle blew, sending the affair into overtime.

And just 1:49 into the extra period, Jeff Skinner nailed the game-winner on a power play goal, much like Victor Olofsson did in Saturday night’s win. And who had the helpers? Eichel and Ristolainen.

Overall, it was a thriller, but with the Blackhawks holding the Sabres scoreless halfway through the third, this most recent come-from-behind win was far more memorable. Especially since the Sabres also had to deal with poor officiating throughout the duration of the contest.
