The Buffalo Sabres will face off with the Detroit Red Wings for an Atlantic Division showdown in what might be their most pivotal matchup to date.

The Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings are two teams on the rise in the Atlantic Division, but their respective general managers have built them in entirely different ways. Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams went with the longer view that will pay dividends long-term if he continues to stick with his plan.

General manager Steve Yzerman built the Red Wings through trades and free agency over the past offseason, though he also has some young talent in the foundation like Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider. Overall, Yzerman is banking on his acquired talent to mesh and build sound chemistry as the season wears on, and the Sabres will give them a test tonight. So let’s check out the odds.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Red Wings Odds – Game 9

Per Fan Duel, the Sabres are -1.5 point favorites at home against the Red Wings. The Over/Under sits at 6.5, and the moneyline for the Sabres is -152. The Red Wings moneyline is +126.

Buffalo Sabres vs. Red Wings Prediction – Game 9

The Sabres recently survived an overtime contest against the Chicago Blackhawks in a thriller. Tonight, I am expecting no different, as the Sabres head into their second overtime game against an evenly-matched Detroit opponent.

This time, though, the Sabres won’t mount a massive comeback, but they will tie the game late to force overtime. In the extra period, the two teams will trade blows, with the Red Wings looking to get one past the Sabres weaker defensive rotation, but goaltender Eric Comrie will have other ideas.

This game is going to go into a shootout, so at best, the Sabres will snag two points here. At worst, look for an overtime loss. As for the final? Someone is going to win this one 5-4. Who wins? The team that wins the shootout.
