What will it take to bring Jakob Chychrun to the Buffalo Sabres?
This season, the Buffalo Sabres aren’t necessarily buyers with a record of 9-12-0, but that doesn’t mean trade rumors aren’t swirling.
As you now know, the Buffalo Sabres are listed as contenders to land Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jacob Chychrun. So what will it take to bring the left-handed defenseman to the Queen City?
If you did any digging, it will take two first round picks, which could either be current players, draft picks, or prospects. That said, we can rule out a couple of players. Jiri Kulich, for example, is going nowhere. Nor will Jack Quinn and J.J. Peterka. Sources also said the Coyotes also wanted, “something else.”
Buffalo Sabres must part ways with two first round picks for Jakob Chychrun
My ideal trade would comprise three players and draft picks to Arizona for the rights to land Chychrun. They will be two former first round picks, plus a pair of young players who can grow into the system.
Krebs’ name is the one I’ve been hearing a lot, and he seems to be the odd-man-out in Buffalo. He fits the mold of a former first round pick that could really, and probably should, be considered a prospect. I’ve also heard Noah Ostlund’s name thrown around, but it’s hard to envision the Sabres getting rid of their own draft pick, whereas Krebs arrived via trade himself.
Right now, the Sabres are also in the lottery for a top ten pick, and odds are, they won’t be in the playoffs. This makes them more enticing than other teams that may be interested in acquiring Chychrun’s services as the Coyotes continue to try and build a desert monster.
Finally, I got the real winner in this trade: Jacob Bryson. Bryson has struggled and never really panned out with the Sabres. But that doesn’t mean he’s a worthless player. Some players don’t perform well in one location, arrive somewhere else via trade or free agency, and either turn into a solid player, or they excel.
Chychrun is a young, talented player, and at 24, he fits perfectly into the Buffalo Sabres system as a long-term fit. He can also give you 20-plus minutes per game. The only real downside here is that he has never played more than 68 games in a single season, which raises red flags with injuries.
