Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson scored one of his more spectacular goals last night and logged two points, putting him at 28 for the season.
In 22 games this season, Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson has 28 points to his credit, putting him on pace for 104 on the season. If Tage succeeds in that endeavor, he will join a rare class of former Sabres that include the following individuals:
- Pat LaFontaine
- Alexander Mogilny
- Gilbert Perreault
- Pierre Turgeon
- Rene Robert
These five players have all put up at least 100 points at one time or another, and many in the Sabres faithful regard them as some of the best forwards in franchise history. And while Tage has ways to go before we even consider him for a spot on the Mount Rushmore of Buffalo Sabres forwards, reaching the 100-point milestone by the season’s end will definitely help matters.
Buffalo Sabres center Tage Thompson on pace for 104 points
In last night’s loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Tage logged yet another spectacular goal, using his long reach to outmaneuver goaltender Brian Elliott to put the Sabres on the board late in the first period. He later provided a helper on Jeff Skinner’s goal that put the Blue and Gold up 5-3.
While the game ended in heartbreaking fashion – the product of a young team getting ahead of themselves – Tage definitely held up his end of the deal. One has to be impressed with the forward, whose big contract extension from the Sabres drew mixed reviews from fans and hockey critics, but so far, he is exceeding expectations.
Overall, Tage has been the team’s best forward and has provided a domineering presence on the Sabres first line alongside Alex Tuch and Jeff Skinner, both of whom, by the way, are on pace for 82 points apiece. They serve as just another example of why this is, despite the 9-12-1 record, NOT the same Buffalo Sabres team we have had the misfortune of seeing over the past decade.
