The Buffalo Sabres averted yet another disastrous third period collapse in last night’s epic win over the Yzerman-built Detroit Red Wings.

If you are keeping score, it’s Kevyn Adams: 2, Steve Yzerman: 0 in the Buffalo Sabres vs. Detroit Red Wings Saga. But if you watched the game last night, you will have seen just how mistake-prone the Sabres, who held a 4-1 lead, had gotten in the third period….again, might I add.

It resulted in a 4-4 tie and the Sabres second jaunt into overtime in as many games. This time, however, they averted collapse and the Blue and Gold went into their first shootout of the season, where Jack Quinn played the role of hero.

And it was a goal to remember if you happened to see it. Starting in the neutral zone, Quinn skated toward the right circle before taking the puck into the slot, right up the middle toward Red Wings goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, faked left near the goal, made a hard right….and tripped.

But not while simultaneously managing to keep the puck glued to his stick just long enough to sink the game-winner. So thus, the Legend of Jack Quinn has been born.

Buffalo Sabres have a brewing star in Jack Quinn

Quinn has 11 points in 18 games this season, and while he struggled early on, his five points over the last five games shows us he is growing into the player everyone has expected him to be. While it’s still far fetched to believe Quinn will be in serious contention for the Calder Trophy, you can at least rest assured that Quinn will end the season, barring anything unforeseen, with solid performances like he has seen in recent weeks.

Overall, his stock continues to rise, and he has more than earned his spot skating on the Cozens line that also includes rookie J.J. Peterka. If Quinn is looking this good now, it will be exciting to track his progress this season.
