Why the Buffalo Sabres will (and won’t) land Jakob Chychrun
As the Jakob Chychrun rumors heat up, the Buffalo Sabres are once again in the middle, given their potential need for a defenseman.
The Buffalo Sabres are in the middle of trade rumors regarding Jakob Chychrun. And while recent history shows general manager Kevyn Adams has stood pat regarding trade rumors and has ended up making no moves, Chychrun would not require as much of a ransom as the likes of Alex DeBrincat or Matthew Tkachuk would have. Plus, Chychrun addresses a greater position of need.
Another reason the Sabres will make a trade for Chychrun is that they have enough cap space to pull one off. They also have more than the required compensation the Arizona Coyotes would be asking for.
Finally, Chychrun’s arrival will help the Sabres further turn the corner into contender status. While they are seventh in the Atlantic, they are also second in the league with 90 goals scored. This means they need someone at the blue line to help prevent opponents from moving the puck with so much ease, and Chychrun could be that missing link.
Why the Buffalo Sabres won’t trade for Chychrun
One reason is that Adams doesn’t make trades. Instead, he likes to use draft picks to bring fresh talent into the prospects pool and he also likes giving those prospects extensive time to develop. Trading for Chychrun will mean parting ways with at least one high-end prospect, and it’s hard to see Adams giving up that kind of compensation.
Chychrun might not even want to come to Buffalo. While he does not have a no-trade clause associated with the Sabres, there is a chance he would reject coming to the Queen City regardless, something that The Hockey Writers implied was the case over the summer regarding a would-be trade to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The current rumor is that Chychrun would like to play for a team that is contending now. And unfortunately, that may not be the Buffalo Sabres in 2022-23.
